Profile:  a power shift

Ulysses "Butch" Slaughter is alchemist, artist and Alpha Black. Ulysses is a "Black of All Trades," a thought leader with an uncanny knack for magically and perpetually producing exquisite events, seamless services and powerful products. Ulysses calculates. He creates. He curates. For nearly three decades, Ulysses has willingly entered and explored dark and difficult spaces with relentless determination to reconcile polarities, synthesize extremities and illuminate possibilities. An uncommon craftsman of campaigns, concepts and forums, Ulysses draws on a deep and diverse wellspring of extraordinary Black Men to guide his decisions and govern his actions. His book "Forgive: the new mantra and practice for Black Men" is a tribute to the Black Men who have paved his path of power. At the fragile age of 12, Ulysses listened as his mother Clarice was shot to death by his father Ulysses Grant Slaughter Sr. Emerging from his bedroom on June 25, 1978, he watched as his mother bled from two gunshot wounds to her head and take some of the last breaths of her life. Though he thought he was alone in this terrifying moment, he wasn't. Stevie Wonder was there. Gil-Scot Heron was there. Marvin Gaye was there. Malcolm X. Throughout his entire life, these Black Men and others had been there, singing, preaching and feeding him raw and rich instructions. Ritualistically, stepping over his mother’s fallen body that day was the first, most important "crossing-over" act in his dramatic odyssey toward reconciliation with his father and himself. A native of Chicago, Illinois, Ulysses has grounded himself in The City of Chester, a small but stirring town just west of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On this restless urban landscape Ulysses works tirelessly to honor the legacy he's been gifted. Author of three books, director of various short films and curator of countless critical community forums, Ulysses has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Network and The Dr. Phil Show. He is a 2013 recipient of The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Leadership Award.

Our outside worlds form "inside" first.  As we think on the inside, we create on the outside. Before he could build creative projects and programs, Ulysses had to first build courage and compassion.
